MWC 2011: Motorola ATRIX Hands-On

Motorola ATRIX, the most powerful smartphone announced until now with Android on board, was present on the floor at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year, and Softpedia's editors had the chance to play around with it for a few minutes. The new smartphone went official last month during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and should arrive on shelves in the not too far future in various markets around the world, including the United States, on the airwaves of AT&T. Motorola touts the handset as being the most powerful smartphone in the world courtesy of its NVIDIA Tegra 2 AP20H Dual Core application processor with each core clocked in at 1 GHz, which was paired with 1 GB of RAM. The impressive raw power ATRIX would be able to deliver is complemented by other capabilities it was packed with, such as the vivid, 4-inch qHD display (540 x 960 pixels), which would prove great for viewing photos or videos on the go, or for web browsing. The new device's comfortable touch-tablet form factor fits great in the hand, and the overall experience it delivers is rounded by multitasking and web browsing features, such as support for offline browsing, Adobe Flash Player, and more. The phone's specs list would include HSDPA / HSUPA connectivity options, along with WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, HDMI 1.3a, USB 2.0 High Speed port, Assisted GPS, E-Compass, or 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Motorola ATRIX sports a 5 megapixels photo snapper on the back, with Dual LED flash, auto focus and 720p HD (1280 x 720) video recording capabilities, as well as a 0.3 megapixels (640 x 480) camera on the front for video calling. Other hardware specs of this device would include a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32 GB of additional storage space, and a range of usual sensors, such as accelerometer, proximity sensor, magnetometer, or ambient light sensor. Running under Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, the new smartphone would also offer support for specific services from the Internet giant, as well as for various applications available for download via the Android Market. One other important feature of this device is available courtesy of a series of docks that Motorola released specifically for it, including a laptop and a multimedia dock.
