Microsoft: Xbox 360 Is Best Selling Console for Sixth Consecutive Month
Having celebrated its five year anniversary at the end of November 2010, the Xbox 360 continues to be at the top of the console game, a position that is bound to only be further consolidated as Microsoft ushers in out-of-this-world NUI gaming experiences.
According to sale figures from market analysis firm NPD group cited by the Redmond company, approximately 1.4 million units of the Xbox 360 console were shipped to customers the past month alone.
Of course, November did have its advantages, the start of the holiday shopping season with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, especially in tandem with the release of Kinect for Xbox 360.
But still, sales of Xbox 360 have been outpacing those of rival consoles long before the Kinect hit store shelves.
“For the sixth month in a row, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 led video game console sales with 1.37 million units sold in November, according to NPD Group, an independent market research firm,” Microsoft stated.
“New NPD Group research also shows that Xbox 360 was the only console to show double digit year-to-date growth at 42 percent, making it the fastest-growing console in 2010. In addition, 50 percent of spending at retail in November for current generation consoles was on the Xbox 360 platform.”
Kinect is itself a massive success. In the first few weeks on the market Microsoft managed to sell in excess of 100,000 units of its natural user interface sensor for Xbox 360 per day.
Statistics released by the software giant reveal that over 2.5 million Kinect units were sold in just the first 25 days since the peripheral was launched. And by all means, the holiday season is anything but done, so Microsoft should do even better by the start of 2011.
But Xbox 360 is not just about Kinect, it’s also about a range of gaming titles, some of which available exclusively on the console.
“ During the month of November, four of the top 10 console game titles were for Xbox 360, including: “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” “Fable III,” “Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood” and “Halo: Reach.” “Call of Duty: Black Ops” for Xbox 360 was the number one selling console game in November,” Microsoft added.
