iPhone 5 In Spring 2012, iPhone 4S Next In Line with A5, 8MP Camera - Report
A source with a mixed track record of predicting Apple product launches and announcements has gone on record to claim that the Cupertino, California tech giant is set to debut an iPhone 4S with an ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and an 8 megapixel camera.
Japanese blog Makotakara takes it upon itself to report that an anonymous source knows of an incremental iPhone 4S set to be released during the July-August timeframe.
The device reportedly has the same form factor as the current-generation model, but boasts enhanced hardware, such as an ARM Cortex-A9 chip (which should be custom-embedded into the Apple-branded A5 silicon).
The source is uncertain whether the CPU is single core or dual core, but it is known that the A5 inside Apple’s iPad 2 (also based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture) is dual core.
Should there be any truth behind the reports saying Apple has equipped high-profile game developers with dual-core iPhones, we should not expect any less from the rumored iPhone 4S either, although the iPhone 5 is the main candidate for blazing fast dual core processing.
The source also mentions an 8 megapixel camera which, according to a report from Chinese trade publication DigiTimes, is supplied to Apple by Largan Precision - the same lens manufacturer behind the current 5 megapixel module used in the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch.
Perhaps most interestingly, this person allegedly also learned that Apple plans to introduce a world phone with the iPhone 4S.
The device will have an integrated SIM and it will work on both GSM (AT&T) and CDMA (Verizon) networks.
Evidence of such plans also comes from the hardware inside Apple’s existing CDMA iPhone 4, which features a Qualcomm Gobi chip that is known to support both cellular standards.
Finally, the source says Apple is not planning an iPhone 5 announcement until next year, most likely in spring.
