There is something about the comments section on websites that just draws people to them. Apart from Facebook which is pretty much based on comments, YouTube has to take out the second spot on the list, although if the memes are anything to go by, people also have quite intelligent conversations on PornHub too... Moving right along though.
Whether you enjoy reading the comments section for a laugh or to fix a problem that the how-to video just didn’t quite solve for you, you will find having the option to read the comments and watch the video at the same time indispensable. So let’s show you exactly how to do it.
How to Read the Comments and Watch the Video on YouTube at the Same Time.
It’s a little surprising that YouTube doesn’t already offer this as a standard option. That doesn’t matter though someone, somewhere, thought about it and decided it needed to be a thing. And now it is. With a simple Chrome extension (Sadly not available for Firefox or Edge) you can bring the comments section side by side with the video. To start, you will need to download the extension, you can grab it here from the official site:
Comment Mode Chrome Extension For YouTube.
Or here from the Direct link to the Chrome extension store:
Comment Mode Chrome Extension For YouTube.
Once you have visited either of the websites and added Comment Mode to Chrome, you can begin using it. The option to toggle comment mode on and off will automatically be added the Youtube video menu, as a new icon to the right of your Full-Screen button.
Simply click it once to turn it on, when it is enabled your video will slide to the right of your screen and the comments will be brought up the left-hand side, where you can scroll as you wish. The only thing you need to be aware of is that if you have your video mode set to Cinema (expanded) on a smaller resolution screen it will move the video off-screen. (I’m sure this will be promptly rectified though) To turn comments mode off at any time, just click the same button and your screen will revert back to its normal layout.
All in all the concept is great and the experience is pretty good to start. Comment Mode is in its early days so you will have to bear with it a little to start, but the developer is working towards more functionality as the days pass, so look out for it in the future with an even more immersive Reading and View experience. And last of all just remember don’t forget the Comments section is a dangerous place to explore sometimes. The Trolls are ugly and the Spoilers never ending...
