How to Use AI Beat Detection in DaVinci Resolve
Editing to the music just got way easier in DaVinci Resolve thanks to the new AI Beat Detection feature. This powerful tool helps you quickly and easily identify the beats in your soundtrack, making it much simpler to sync your cuts to the rhythm of the music. While it won’t handle every aspect of your edit, it’s a huge time-saver that a lot of people have been waiting for.
How to Use AI Beat Detection in DaVinci Resolve
As always, start by importing your music track into the timeline on either the Edit or Cut page. Just drag it from your media pool and drop it onto the timeline as you normally would.
Once you have your track on your timeline, right-click directly on the music clip in the timeline. From the menu that appears, select “Show Music Beats.” DaVinci Resolve will then automatically analyse your audio and detect the beats.
This process is very quick, and once it's done, you'll see small markers appear along the music track in your timeline. These markers represent the detected beats and continue throughout the duration of the track.
To make the most of beat detection, make sure that snapping is enabled. This is the little magnet icon on the timeline toolbar. When snapping is on, any clip you move or trim will automatically align with the nearest beat marker.
Now, go ahead and drag a video clip from your media pool onto the timeline. As you move it around, you’ll notice it snapping into place along those beat markers. This makes it incredibly simple to time your cuts precisely with the rhythm of the music, adding a professional polish to your edits without guesswork or constant playback checks.
Adjusting Edit Points
You can also fine-tune your edit points using the beat markers. If you're trimming clips or adding transitions, use the snapping feature to align everything rhythmically. Whether you’re cutting to the downbeat of a song or syncing visuals with subtle background changes, these beat markers provide a solid visual reference.
Use the Music Remixer for Dynamic Adjustments
Staying on the topic of music, DaVinci Resolve also includes an AI-powered music retiming tool known as the Music Remixer. Introduced in recent versions, this feature allows you to change the duration of a music track without affecting its key moments or structure. It’s ideal for adjusting music to fit the exact length of your video without awkward cuts or noticeable tempo shifts.
Now Use the AI Audio Assist Tool
Once you have got most of your project organised, I highly suggest checking out the new AI Audio Assist tool. This tool will organise all of the audio on your timeline into a perfect work of art. While it's still current only in beta, it does a mind-bogglingly good job of things and only requires a little bit of tweaking here and there. You can check out our full guide on it below.
