How to Overclock your GPU Using the NVIDIA App.
NVIDIA is transitioning everything from the NVIDIA Control Panel and GeForce Experience into a new, streamlined, and user-friendly app. Although not all features have been migrated yet and some settings won't be transferred, this is a welcome and overdue update. Additionally, the new app now supports overclocking, so join us as we guide you through the process of overclocking your graphics card using the NVIDIA app.
How to Overclock your GPU Using the NVIDIA App.
- First download the new NVIDIA App
- Once you've downloaded and installed the NVIDIA App make sure you close everything running on your system except for the NVIDIA app. Then change to the System Tab on the left then Performance.
- Here you will see an option called Automatic turning. Flip the toggle to On (green) then wait for the process to complete.
- It will take quite a long time to prepare an overclock. For my 4070 it took nearly 40 minutes.
- When the process completes you'll see the newly added Overclock settings. You can see an example below. If you get an interruption message start again.
I ran the tool a couple of times and it gave the exact same overclock settings. Which were absolutely tiny compared to what you can get using MSI Afterburner and a good set of manual settings acquired from elsewhere. The NVIDIA app is super conservative, especially when you consider they should know the inner workings of their hardware better than anyone else yet they don't push any limits.

NVIDIA App Overclocking vs MSI Afterburner Overclocking?
For the longest time, we've been using MSI Afterburner for all our overclocking which has been a flawless experience that's pretty damn hard to beat. So you're probably wondering if it is worth switching from MSI Afterburner to the NVIDIA App for overclocking. To put it simply, at this point in time the answer is a solid NO. The NVIDIA app pushed out a tiny little overclock compared to what MSI Afterburner could easily manage. Here's a side-by-side comparison. The CURVE aspect in Afterburner also includes a large undervolt so there is a big performance increase with a big decrease in power usage. Something the NVIDIA app doesn't seem to even consider.
Is it Worth Upgrading to the New NVIDIA App?
Compared to Geforce Experience the NVIDIA App has the potential to become a central hub for all things related to your NVIDIA GPU. With continued updates and feature integrations, it could eventually rival the functionality of MSI Afterburner. But from an OC standpoint it's not even registering on the radar yet. But you should keep an eye on updates and new features as they roll out, as these could enhance the app’s capabilities and make it a more compelling choice for GPU management and overclocking. Once they roll the rest of the options and features over from the NVIDIA Control Panel it will be even better. While the NCP is outdated and super slow it does it's job without any issues and for as often as you use it who really cares?
