Threads, the highly anticipated app released by Meta (formerly Facebook), aims to provide users with a safe and stable alternative to the chaotic nature of the internet and more specifically Twitter. Built on the foundation of Instagram, Threads offers a familiar environment for connecting with friends and followers, with unique advantages and a growing user base.
Threads is proving to be super popular though it isn’t for everyone, so if you find yourself wanting to take a step back from Threads, whether due to privacy concerns or a desire to explore other options, we've got you covered. Below you will find out how to quickly and easily deactivate your Threads profile without affecting your Instagram profile.

So you’ve decided that Threads isn’t for you! Well, here are the steps you need to follow in order to deactivate your account.
- First, open the Threads app on your device.
- Next, tap your Profile icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
- Now tap the 2 lines in the top right-hand corner.
- From this menu tap Account then tap Deactivate Profile.
- Here you will see the following message:
“Deactivating your profile is temporary. Your Profile, threads, replies and likes will be hidden until you reactivate by logging back in. Learn more about how to delete your data. This will not affect your Instagram account.”
Now simply tap the Deactivate Threads profile option at the bottom of the page and your account will be deactivated after one more final confirmation.

At this point in time once you have created and linked a Threads account with your Instagram account there is no way to unlink them to delete them separately.
The only way to delete a Threads account (at the time of writing) is to go into the Instagram app and delete your Instagram account. This is super inconvenient for users and something nearly nobody is going to want to do so you’re pretty much stuck with the Deactivation option. At some stage, they will probably change this but for the foreseeable future, this is the only option available.
What about getting a copy of your Threads data?
If you want to download a copy of all of your data, go to Profile > Accounts > Download your information. Now simply follow the steps and you will get a download link with your data. Just remember that this process may take a fair bit of time to complete. Up to 4 days sometimes. Again this will probably depend on the amount of data that you currently have. The longer you have been using the app the more data you will have to deal without. However, at this point in time that probably won’t be too much of an issue.
