Battlefield 3 Isn't Going After Call Of Duty, Developer Says
The upcoming Battlefield 3 first-person shooter isn't actively trying to take down its biggest rival, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, even if statements from its developer or publisher have seemed to hint that the new title will go straight for the jugular of the Activision shooter.
This fall will see two of the biggest first-person shooter franchises go at it, as Electronic Arts is set to publish the DICE-developed Battlefield 3 on October 26, while Activision will release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on November 8, after being developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games.
As you can imagine, the companies involved are engaged in a bitter statement war, comparing the titles from various aspects and declaring their own as the absolute winner.
Now, according to Battlefield 3 Executive Producer Patrick Bach, his own game isn't particularly setting its target on Call of Duty, even if it has pretty much the same characteristics, from the gameplay and feeling to the separation of the single-player, cooperative and multiplayer modes.
"Honestly, we're not trying to go after Call of Duty," the DICE executive told Edge magazine. "Of course there will be crossover - it's a first-person shooter, it's modern-day, and there are resemblances on locations, even - we're all inspired by the same media and the world around us. But to be a star you need to play your own songs."
Even if Bach highlights that the two titles aren't that similar, many gamers are going to have a tough time differentiating between the two games that are set to appear for the same platforms and pretty much at the same time later this year.
Until then, it's not likely that the war of words between EA and Activision is going to stop, so prepare for even more bitter statements to be exchanged over Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
